John Mayer ends My Pre-residency Training

October 1, 2010

3 A.M And we recieved an emergency call that we need to assess two patients at the E.R. First case, a 17 year old male who was diagnosed with Acute Appendicitis, for 'E' Appendectomy under SAB. Second case, a 4 year old male with massive Empyema based on Chest X Ray and with decreased breath sounds on his Right Lung, for 'E' CTT insertion under GETA. In this line of specialty, being Obsessive-Compulsive is a MUST specially in doing pre-op evaluations. After doing such evaluations, I was asked by one my seniors to generally doze off and sleep.

Around 4 A.M And all I am thinking is that ... It is my LAST day. My first taste of what residency would be like. For incoming First years like me, I was exposed to doing calculations on my mind, learning about the anesthesia machine, adjusting to residents own tantrums, cleaning the conference room on Saturdays and Of course washing dishes at dawn. But at the end of this Pre-residency training, I'm a bit confused  regarding its worth. Honestly speaking, Anesthesia residency is very contradicting to my chillax and coolax personality. Yes I understand the whole nature of the field, but I dont like to be stressed MOST of the time. A friend of mine would naturally shout at me: Well what the heck are you doing there?!!! As he listen to all my angst I've been complaining.

5:30 AM And Alex (my co- pre res) rang me up on my sleep, reminding me of the Bupivicaine push while he's assisiting inside the O.R. I feel energized now, knowing that a few hours my Pre-residency officially ends. Why do I feel relieved and happy about going out of the Hospital. As I was assessing the patient and giving the 10 cc Bupivacaine, I was thinking of the John Mayer concert. Well my Buddy and I are going to watch the concert later in the evening. I actually knew a few of his songs but doing something rather than a 30 hours duty is much more appealing.

9 AM The CTT insertion on the kid was favorable, and I saw Alex sleeping beside his patient. Like a huge building about to collapse.The senior resident asked me to assist other residents doing induction in their respective electives, one Thyroidectomy and one open Cholecystectomy. After giving the residents what they wanted, I immediately went inside the Recovery Room and looked for a table to catch SLEEP. My body and brain now feels sOO tired.

10 A.M The chief resident just finished his O.R and saw me and my protruding saliva on the table. He instantly asked me to LEAVE, pack my bags as my pre-residency training in Anesthesia officially ends. Then I woke up with so much energy as If I drank 3 red bulls!!! then I took my scrubs out and dressed into my casual clothes. Walking and leaving th hospital with so much happiness. I just can't understand.Can't wait to see my bed at home, rest for awhile and get ready for the John Mayer concert !!! What a way to end and recover from the Anesthesia given. Now I am fully recovered and fully awake from the immediate effects of the anesthesia with Stable vital signs noted. To the concert 'now'.   :}
